Mission Statement

It is the mission of Take-5-to-Exercise to optimize function and well-being while reducing the incidence of falls among the aging population through the specific application of seated stretching and strengthening movements.

Kelly is a survivor.  She knows how an accident can affect your life, what if feels like to be in wheelchair, what if feels like to need assistance with activities of daily living, and how to preserve through tough times.

In 1985 Kelly was hit and run over by 2 cars, breaking her pelvis and left femur.  In addition to the structural damage, she suffered internal injuries and was left with road burn all over her body.  After being comatose for 5 days, she awoke with all her faculties (including those pearly whites and happy thoughts!) and was ready for her third basketball camp of the summer.  Think again.

Kelly quickly discovered how quickly an accident can change your life. She had to endure 2 physical therapy sessions per day to regain the strength that was lost during her 3-month hospitalization.  She learned to walk again in a water tank until she was strong enough to use a walker.   Determined to play basketball again, she stayed after practice to gain endurance and adapt to her new limitations.

Kelly knows that rehabilitation is tough but hard work pays off. Kelly was awarded a full basketball scholarship to Division 1 school, Radford University.  As a result of her life experience, Kelly hopes to encourage elders who have fallen or are fraid of falling.  “Disease prevention and health promotion through the pplication of physical movement” is her area of expertise and she is passionate about helping people better themselves.
